This program will not solve a Crypto Quip puzzle for you
it is only intended as a way to make it easier for you to enter
and change your letter substitutions. For me, this is so much
easier than using paper and pencil. This allows me to try more
things knowing I can back that out and try something else with
little effort.
Crypto Quip puzzles are short phrases that are encrypted using
a simple substitution cipher. Each letter in the puzzle has
been replaced by another letter. If one "U" is replacing the "L"
then every "U" in the puzzle is actually an "L".
Here are the instructions for using the Crypto Quip Solver:
In the top text area, type in the puzzle exactly as it is
presented. I find these puzzles in the newspaper but you can
buy books that are full of them and they are also online.
Here is an example:
YI Z DJOFYZU FUTZW VOKO
VTKB CMKYBH PSO QTKBYBH
QOZU, Y HMODD PSZP VTMUC
RO Z RKOZWIZDP VKZJ.
(You can copy and paste this into the solver)
Typically, you are given one clue. In this puzzle, you are told
that "U" does indeed equal "L".
The program will automatically capitalize your entries and will wrap as needed.
In the text area below the top one, you will see your current solution
appear. There will be a blank for every letter but your punctuation will
be preserved.
Below that is the area where you make your guesses as to what the letters
actually stand for. You can start by typing an "L" where you see the "U=".
When you do this every corresponding place in the second text area will be
updated with the letter L. From here, it is up to your wits and knowledge
of the English language. I start by looking for one and two letter words.
In this puzzle you have a Z and a Y. One has to be I and the other has to
be an A.
When you finish the puzzle, you will be rewarded with an excellent pun.
Enjoy.
